General Information
Steinbock Hotel is the oldest and therefore the most traditional hotel in Grindelwald, completely rebuilt in 1992. It is a cozy, chalet-style, government-rated three-star hotel, just opposite the Sunstar Hotel and lying near the bottom of the First gondola leading to the First skiing area in winter or a hiking Valhalla in summer. The ski bus stop for Klein Scheidegg/Mannlichen areas is located just next to the Steinboch.
The Gasthof Steinbock gained a place in history with the Boss Buebe (famous folklore musicians), after Christian Boss took over the business from the Bohren family in 1938. Even before then the Steinbock, at times also referred to as the Gemsbock, was renowned as a meeting-place and among travelers, primarily also because of a famous local beauty, "the beautiful ship-owner of Lake Brienz", who had managed the business with her husband from 1818. Well-known writers and painters often told of this remarkable and extremely beautiful woman. After this the Steinbock was run for many years with great dedication and care by Christian Boss jr. and family. On his death his brother Hans bought the business and rebuilt the Steinbock in 1992. Sadly he died an early and unexpected death, and the attractive inn was put on the market. Urs-B. Hauser, proprietor of the Hotel Belvedere in Grindelwald, (Christian Boss was his great-uncle, the Boss Boys second cousins or uncles) and Salvatore Ponzio set themselves the goals of continuing the history of the Boss Boys in the Steinbock and made an offer for the inn, since well-informed sources had advised him that the business would otherwise fall into external hands.
Bedrooms are medium in size, handsomely and comfortably furnished in a modern Alpine style. The hotel's Grappa Bar offers 100 different kinds of grappas.
