Pousada De Santa Maria Hotel built in 1953.Almost 1000 meters above the sea level, the Hotel Pousada Santa Maria is situated in the unspoiled medieval hamlet of Marvao. Bordering Spain, this beautiful little walled town has remained virtually unchanged.
The steep little cobbled streets wind up to the 13th century picture book castle rising from the rock.
From the keep the views across the Alentejo plains to Spain are stunning.
Approximately 20 kms away is the walled town of Portalegre overlooked by the ruins of its medieval castle.
It became a centre for tapestry production and silk weaving resulting in the building of some magnificent Baroque merchant houses and mansions. Worth visiting are the municipal museum with its collection of European tiles and ceramics.
In addition, Casa de Jose Regio houses an extensive private collection of religious artefacts.The Pousada Santa Maria is housed in two beautiful medieval buildings and is tucked away in one of the many cobbled lanes of the town.
