PALAIS JAMAIS HOTEL FEZ |
General Information
Built in 1879 by the Grand Vizier to Sultan Moulay Hassan I, the famed Palais Jamais Hotel has been favored by discerning travelers since it became a hotel in the 1930's. This 19th-century, superior first-class hotel has an exotic decor and overlooks the Old City.
The Moorish-style palace and its lovely Andalusian gardens were the setting for Paul Bowles' novel, The Spider's House, which chronicled the fall of the French Protectorate in Fez in the 1950s. A recent, rather slick renovation has left much of the beautiful green and blue zellij, carved plaster and painted beams intact; although one suspects that the glitzy lobby, populated by American and British tour groups, might be a recent addition.
