Sussex Gardens was built to provide luxury houses for Victorian families, including very famous names. Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the World Scout movement was christened in St James's Church. Sussex Gardens was designed in early 19th century by Samuel Pepys Cockerell and is preserved for its architectural interest. Latrobe, who built the Capitol in Washington was a pupil under Cockerell.
