Sussex Gardens was built to provide luxury houses for Victorian families, including very famous names. Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the World Scout movement was christened in St James's Church. The family of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived in the Gardens and at St Mary's Hospital, Sir Alexander Flemming discovered penicillin.
Sussex Gardens was designed in early 19th century by Samuel Pepys Cockerell and is preserved for its architectural interest. Latrobe, who built the Capitol in Washington was a pupil under Cockerell.
